by Agnes Chiao

Senior Director of Neighborhood Initiatives and Innovation

We were honored to have a wonderful group of people visiting the Harlem Children’s Zone and the Children’s Aid Society a couple of weeks ago in New York.  The group included City of South Salt Lake Mayor – Cherie Wood, Superintendent of Granite School District – Martin Bates, City of South Salt Lake Community Advocate – Kari Cutler, UWSL Board Member – Kathie Miller, UWSL Board Member – Paula Green Johnson, Utah State Education Board Member – David Crandall, Prosperity 2020 – Vicki Varela, and a few UWSL staff.

Vicki Varela, Prosperity 2020, wrote this great piece about her experience visiting the Harlem Children’s Zone that was recently published in the Salt Lake Tribune. Prosperity 2020 ( is a coalition of Utah’s top business leaders assembled to improve Utah’s economy through education.
