Harland Clarke Knows How to LIVE UNITED!

A few weeks ago, Harland Clarke showed its commitment to changing the odds for kids and families in our community by holding a “Leadership Week,” which included presentations on UWSL’s work, tours of Neighborhood Centers, and volunteer projects.

Harland Clarke is a large company and has a long history with United Way of Salt Lake. In fact, they run two completely separate campaigns so that everybody has a chance to participate. The forms and order acceptance departments met for a breakfast meeting at Paradise Bakery, where they listened to a presentation about the success United Way of Salt Lake is seeing through Collective Impact work. They also held an in-depth discussion about UWSL’s Donor Networks and rallied employees to get engaged. Harland Clarke discussed and had a very positive response to information about 2-1-1, United Way’s call center, which provides health and human services, as well as gives out information for volunteer opportunities. It was terrific to spend time with a group who is so actively involved in our community and full of questions and ideas. After breakfast, the employees headed to a tour of Granger Elementary Community School, a United Way of Salt Lake Neighborhood Center. The level of involvement was really fun to see, and by the end of the tour, everyone seemed full of enthusiasm for this year’s United Way campaign and how they can help kids succeed from cradle to career.

Harland Clarke’s customer contact center also got involved and kicked-off their leadership week the next day. A luncheon and presentation were held for the group leaders and managers. Their Plant Manager, Mitch Wilson, was in attendance and I was able to publicly present him with United Way of Salt Lake’s Community Champion award, an award that is only given out to companies who demonstrate the highest level of giving and commitment. This award underscores the involvement of Harland Clarke in the work of United Way of Salt Lake, and I was proud of these individuals who work hard year after year to make the campaign a success.

The customer contact center also followed its meeting with a tour of Granite Park Jr. High, and participated in a volunteer project. The forms and order acceptance departments will be doing their project on our annual Day of Caring, and both groups have gathered a huge amount of school supplies for United Way’s Stuff the Bus effort.

By adhering to all of the campaign best practices, such as committee meetings, presentations, tours, volunteer projects, and leadership meetings, Harland Clarke is a great model for how to run a successful campaign!
