Did you know that state and local school boards impact the trajectory of our state, our competitiveness, and our children?
Primary ballots will be mailed out next week and there is a lot more at stake than what you think! While Trump, Hillary, and Bernie will not be on this ballot, there are a number of not-so-well known names that will be. And they are these names, the candidates for school board, that have a direct impact on the lives of students and the future of our state. Depending on where you live, you may have the opportunity to vote for state and maybe even local school board seats. For most of us, these names are similar to the judges who appear on our ballots in November — we might not know who they are. Yet, these people make big decisions that impact children, families, teachers, and the overall quality of Utah education.
Last week UWSL hosted a Community Hangout focused on the role of the State Board. If you missed it, I invite you to watch it now. But at the very least, I would encourage you to visit our School Board page which has additional information, like links on how to find what State School Board district you live in, if the seat is up for election, who currently represents you, and who is running to represent you. There are also a number of debates being held prior to the primary, starting on June 7, where you can meet the candidates and learn more.
If you care about the education of our children, it’s important to become an informed voter, get to know your school board member or who may want to represent you, and ensure they know what YOU want to see happen with the direction of education in Utah.
